Gameplay:

Since Super Mario 64 we've been waiting for another lovable Mario that would transport us into new gaming dimensions. The wait is over. Super Mario Galaxy revolutionizes the way Mario saves his princess. Now, as you jump from one galaxy to another you'll enter a new and stranger dimension of Mario's world. As always, you're out to save the princess, and there is a space station you can rest at between missions, much like the Mario 64 castle. This time, however, special stars catapult you into new galaxies where you collect stars in hopes of saving Princess Peach. Mario is given a number of suits, including a bee suit and others that enable you spit fireballs or freeze water. A couple suits can make the gameplay frustrating. The bee suit, for example, disappears when you touch water, and somehow water is always abundant when you don this suit. It's also a bit difficult to control, but nonetheless the gameplay is fascinating and original, and also similar to Super Mario Bros 3.

Controls:

Here is where Wii brings a little spark to the Mario gameplay. As you'd expect, you can swing the remote to do a spin attack which knocks your enemies senseless. You can also shimmy up vines, ropes, and poles by swinging the remote back and forth. Aside from this you have your standard controls which are smooth and easily maneuverable. There is also the addition of the star which corresponds to the motion sensor. By pointing the controller at the sensor, you can aim the star that follows Mario around at other smaller stars and collect them for a variety of purposes. While some of Mario's suits are difficult to control, it's easy to get the hang of. Practically flawless in this department.

Graphics:

Mario is freshly animated with new expressions. He also has amazingly unique environments to explore, which take the shape of many classic Mario levels, but many stages and galaxies are quite original and innovative. There is, for example, a space junk galaxy where you hope around small pieces of space junk to reach your goal. Other stages contain a number of small planets you hop around until you can reach the main star. Your enemies are new and old, and nothing is pixilated or glitched. Absolutely flawless in every respect, according to what we'd expect on Wii.

Sound:

Mario's soundtrack is odd, funky, cute, and comically spooky. You might hardly pay attention to the soundtrack in game, but it sure makes for a pleasant and fun environment. One peculiarity is that Mario's voice seems to be getting higher and higher through the years; perhaps he had a little too much helium, but he'll get a good laugh out of you. If Mario's high voice doesn't make you laugh, be sure to check out the little mushrooms. They squeak, holler, and grunt in ways you've never heard. Ambient sound effects are present and suitable for Mario's spunky world, and the sound is all in all another accomplished aspect of this incredible game.

Replay Value:

Replay value can be tricky with Mario. There are many stars to gain and many side quests which will keep you busy. As far as replaying the game once you're finished, there is a good chance you will enjoy Mario two to three more times before you're absolutely done with him. With such accomplished level designs and interactive gameplay, you're sure to get your money's worth.

Own, Rent, Avoid:

Own: This game is a truly unique Mario game that can't be passed up. With tons of galaxies to explore and with many suits to put on, you will become an entirely new Mario.

Last Thoughts:

Super Mario Galaxy reinvents Mario for the first time since Super Mario 64. It's safe to say that this game rivals previous versions and takes Mario to a new level of intricate gameplay which utilizes the Wii remote and sensor. Mario has now been brought to the modern age.
