Shenmue

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Release Date: Nov. 6, 2000
Developer: Sega-AM2
ESRB: Teen

Shenmue was just one of those games we can't forget, while many casual gamers never knew of its existence. Sadly, while the game sold over a million copies, it would have taken every Dreamcast owner to buy two copies of the game in order for Sega to turn a profit. The game costed an unprecedented $70 million to make, and it's no wonder it's on the top-four best titles of Dreamcast. Shenmue employed an extensive environment that was completely interactive, and intertwined with a story of mystery and passion that led the main character, Ryo, to search for the man who murdered his father. Modern-day games like Oblivion should be thankful that Shenmue paved the way for future RPGs and allowed such games to be much more creative, cinematic, and realistic. Taking a turn from more fantasy-based RPGs, Shenmue was entirely realistic down to the point of the cities in Japan and China which defined the setting. Though Shenmue III will not likely appear any time in the near future, we can only hope the series will be revived some day.

Parasite Eve

Platform: Playstation
Release Date: Sep. 9th, 1998
Developer: Square
ESRB: Mature

Based on the fiction novel, Parasite Eve was a novel game in itself. It did what many games still struggle to do today: have a story. The world is ready to be taken over by mitochondria, or the energy factories in biological cells which are controlled by Eve, the nemesis in the game. Eve calls on these cells in humans to take over other cells in the body, therefore endangering humankind. Aya Brea, the main character and a simple NYPD cop, takes the initiative to find the solution and save humanity. Not only did this game lead the way for games like Silent Hill and other survival horror games, but it was one of the first games to have a quite complicated plot with a basis in biology. The characters were original, the setting was realistic and unique, and the gameplay was revolutionary in that it was one of the first to integrate battles into the world environment, much like modern RPGs do today. We hope that one day this series will pick up where it left off.

Resident Evil: Director's Cut

Platform: Playstation
Release Date: March 22, 1996
Developer: Capcom
ESRB: Mature

By looking at the release date, you can guess that this game invented survival horror. Filled with zombies, parasites, and enemy-infested sewers and tunnels, Resident Evil was probably the first of its genre to instill terror in the hearts of gamers, and from then on we wanted more and more. Yet Resident Evil was not only about the zombies and monsters that were literally lurking in every dark corner of the mansion, it was also about the music, the suspensful sounds, the fixed camera angles, the lighting, and nearly every other factor that made this game a classic survival horror masterpiece. While making your way through an evil mansion in order to put the pieces of a puzzle together which revolve around an evil corporation, you have to solve mini puzzles all through the game to reach the end. This game makes you think, gasp, jump, and hurt. There will probably never be a better game in this genre than the original.

Final Fantasy VIII

Platform: Playstation
Release Date: Feb. 11, 1999
Developer: Squaresoft
ESRB: Teen

This classic RPG was hated by some, but loved by most. It was a romantic tragicomedy that took the gamer through every stage of emotion, and through every part of the physical universe: from the bottom of the ocean, to the surface of Earth, and to outer space. It even took the gamer through various dimensions of time in order to defeat Ultimecia, the sorceress who is a threat to planet Earth itself. As the main character Squall fufills his duty and battles Ultimecia and her followers that are bent on world destruction, he struggles with his own love for Rinoa, who is later taken under Ultimecia's spell. FFVIII is one of the first RPGs to make romance real for video games. While previous games have always had romance, as even Mario longed to save his princess, Squall and Rinoa created a cinematic romance that caught the eye of gamers and allowed for future romances to develop from their foundation. Many aspects of the game, from the soundtrack, to the gameplay, to the graphics, and to the story were revolutionary on Playstation; it's no wonder the story continues on.
